June 19 - 23, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Outcome: I can appreciate multiple points of view, languages, cultures and experiences within groups and communities.

June 21st was National Indigenous Peoples Day. We honoured our Indigenous traditions by learning Indigenous games for children. We began by learning "Line Tag" played by the Blackfoot. Children were working on developing skills such as running, chasing and balancing.  The next game we learned was "Tatanka Tatanka" played by the Dakoda women and children. This game was played to mimic their fathers and grandfathers who used to go on the buffalo hunt. This led to a beautiful discussion about Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump. This is a wonderful place to visit, explore and learn the history of the jump.

With our buddies, we read the book "The Giving Tree" and created Metis Dot Art. Ask your child how we created this art.

In music, Ms. Harris shared this lovely song with our students. Tsuaki Marule is a Blackfoot singer singing O' Canada. Students enjoyed it so much, they requested we play it in class as well.

Thank you for the pleasure of teaching your children this year. I have enjoyed watching them learn to read and write! It is amazing and I am so proud of each child and the progress they have made this year! Wishing you all a wonderful summer and see you in September!
