Mar. 13 - 17, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can appreciate multiple points of view, languages, cultures and experiences in communities.

Students spent the week learning about Ireland, shamrocks and leprechauns We discussed why people celebrate St. Patrick's Day and how to identify a shamrock. Students also had the opportunity to see Irish dancing and listen to some Irish music. During our social and science periods, we used our learning to create a community for a leprechaun. Students were very engaged in this task and we had some amazing buildings and spaces being created. Ask your child what they were building, what they incorporated and why. In our writing, we made a plan and wrote about an adventure or experience with or trying to find, a leprechaun. We also used incorporated measuring into our lessons this week.

For those who are looking for some extra math fun at home, here is a link to an online math challenge.

Reminder: We are heading into Fish Creek Park on Tuesday afternoon. Please see the email sent on Thursday, March 16 for more information.

Mar. 6 - 10, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

What an assembly!! I am bursting with pride for each and every child in our class. Our students have learned and grown so much since the beginning of the year and I am so thrilled they were able to share this learning with our school community and with so many families.

Learning Intention: I can identify and describe examples of plant changes that occur on a seasonal basis. I can create an original composition based on what I see around me. I can use different techniques, which have an emphasis on exploring, to create a piece of art. I can respond to my artwork and the artwork of my peers.

During our science and art lessons this past week, we have been discussing trees and how they change during the seasons. We have drawn a tree in each season and compared them. We created a piece of art from this learning by working with different techniques and media forms such as watercolour pencil crayons, markers, oil pastels and charcoal. Once our art was completed, we shared what we noticed, what we wondered and what made each piece special and unique.

Feb. 27 - Mar. 3, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can BE A ROCK STAR! I can share experiences, ideas and information with appropriate volume, tone, and pace. I can adjust speaking volume, tone and pace for a variety of situations. I can present stories, songs, poems and dramatizations individually or as part of a group.

Honestly, your children are exceptional. We have worked so hard preparing for our spring assembly (Monday, March 6 @10:00 am). Students have learned a poem, and a few songs, and are all speaking in the assembly, using a microphone! We are learning about projecting our voice and showing our enjoyment while presenting to an audience. This was all done while learning about spring, new beginnings, Indigenous teachings, the equinox and signs of spring. We look forward to sharing our learning with you on Monday and this week at conferences. I am so very proud of each one of my students and how dedicated they are to being the best they can be, each and every day.

For conferences, please book a 15 min time slot for us to discuss your child's progress and next steps. You are also welcome to have your child show you some of their work and learning this year.
