Hello, Grade 1 Families, 

Learning Intention: I can add and subtract within 20. I can solve problems using addition and subtraction. 

We have been learning about different symbols we use in math such as +, - and =. Did you know = means "the same as"? In our learning, we have used many tools to help us with addition and subtraction. Students have been using manipulatives like the counters in the pictures below, number lines ("It gives you the answer!" ~AW), tens frames, crossing out images and colouring in pictures. We are working on being flexible with our numbers and finding efficient ways to count such as combining numbers to make 5 or 10 as it is easier to work with those numbers. (Ex: 1+4+3 can be turned into 5+3). Find ways to practice these skills at home to help build accuracy.

Hello, Grade 1 Families, 

Learning Intention: I can practice words and actions that support friendship. I can describe the ways our community supports relationships with others.

We had a week of learning about love! How to show love for myself and others. We began by watching this short video where a little girl shows love for herself. We compliment others and tell them what a great job they are doing but we often forget to share the love with ourselves. Some students shared positive "heartprints" about themselves and others created a plan for giving themselves heartprints this week. Talk to your child about ways you share love with yourself.

The second step in our learning was leaving "heartprints" for others. Inspired by the Kindergarten/Grade 2 assembly this week, we wrote kindness messages on hearts that will be hung on the school-wide kindness tree. We also partnered with our buddies and wrote kindness messages on paper to create a long, school-wide chain.
