Nov 21 - 25, 2022

 Hello, Grade 1 families!

Learning Intention: I can be responsible for my belongings. I can be a good citizen in our school community by helping organize our Lost and Found and returning lost items to students in our school.

Our class has taken on the school's "Lost and Found" as part of our community initiative relating to "Our Community"  and ways we can help our community by being responsible. Every day we sort through the clothing and look for names. We then go through class lists and return the items to their owner. Our students are learning to be responsible for their belongings, remember to bring their items to their backpacks and help others in our school.

An awesome event we witnessed this week was when a student lost their Rubix cube in the snow. Our entire class went out multiple times and tried to help find it. "Come on! Let's go look for the Rubix cube!" I love seeing our friends help each other!

As I shared in our conferences, we are learning the first 125 High-Frequency Words in Grade 1. Here is a list for those interested.

We shared our reading with our classmates this week! Check out some of our videos:

Nov 14 - 18, 2022

Hello, Grade 1 families!

Learning Intention: I can use my senses to explore and explain my surroundings.

On Friday, we went to Fish Creek Park. Students predicted what it would look like when we arrived. We will compare what we experienced on this trip to our experience in the summer (September walking field trip). We used 4 of our senses (see, touch, hear, and smell) to explore Fish Creek Park. Ask your child what was different this time. What was similar?

While in Fish Creek Park, we played! We tested the snow and found it was not good snowman-building snow. We wondered why? We made snow angels and found the snow crunchy. We wondered why? We explored along an adventure path that leads to "Shrek's Swamp". We saw many animal tracks. We were wondering which animals made them. We will explore this in one of our upcoming science units! We heard birds, snow crunching and the wind. While we were walking to and from Fish Creek, we could smell different smells in the air. Sometimes it was the smell of a vehicle, and sometimes the smell of a person's perfume. The best part though was when we could get passing cars to wave to us and we even had 3 cars honk their horns for us!

* Thank you for sending your child dressed in their winter gear! Everyone was warm and happy.

Conference Note: In Grade 1, we have the opportunity to work in small groups for reading instruction. During this time, each group rotates through 3 "stations". In one of those "stations", every student in our class works daily with Ms. Kaura Grant (Reading Support Teacher). If you would like to discuss your child and how they are progressing in their reading,  she will be available from 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm on Thursday, November 24th, and from 8:30 am until 12:30 pm on Friday, November 25th. You book the conference through your MyCBE account like you would book a conference with me. I encourage you to meet with Ms. Grant!

Nov 7 - 11, 2022

 Hello, Grade 1 families!

Learning Intention: I can develop physical literacy through movement. I can understand why active living supports well-being across a lifespan.

In Grade 1 we have gym every day for 30 minutes. We begin our time with two laps around the gym and meet on the blue circle. Next, we work on our core muscles by completing 3 popcorn exercises and 3 superman exercises. Ask your child to show these to you! From there we often play a warm-up game before starting our unit activity. We have just completed 3 weeks of learning about volleyball and have now begun learning the skills and strategy for Gaga ball.

Students are also provided with a Fresh Air Break (FAB) every day and a recess break at lunch. We encourage our students to run and play!

We continue to talk about why being active is essential for our bodies and how it changes our bodies. Ask your child what happens to their heart rate and breathing when they are active during the day. In Grade 1, we also spend time learning to regulate our bodies by calming our minds and bodies after we have been active.
