Hello, Grade 1 Families, 

Learning Intention: I can participate in physical activity in various contexts to improve my well-being. I can demonstrate multiple ways of moving safely through space during physical activity. 

This week we had the fantastic opportunity to have Coach Dave teach basketball to us. Coach Dave was such a good instructor and taught us many different skills. We started each day with a warm-up that always included warming up our big muscles and often had strange sound effects. Ask your child to show you the sumo squats and the corresponding sound. I love it! After our warm-up, we practiced our skills. We have been learning to pass, dribble and shoot the ball AND all of this can be done from the "triple threat" position. This is another good one to have your child demonstrate at home. Later in the week, we began playing mini-games and one challenge was to shoot the ball on the net but, we couldn't dribble, we had to pass! We can't thank Coach Dave enough for spending this week with us and sharing his knowledge and love of basketball with us. Looking forward to warmer weather where we can show off our skills on the outdoor courts.

Hello, Grade 1 Families, 

Learning Intention: I can create messages through the application of writing processes. 

As we move into the next term of our year, we have adjusted how we write in class. We will use an anchor text each week to guide our writing content/ideas and will begin our writing process with a planning page. This week we used a picture planning page where we drew which season was our favourite and then in the remaining boxes we drew why our chosen season was our favourite. The next day (s) we wrote using our planning page. As we continue with this process, we will add in partner sharing, whole-class sharing and revising to make our writing more interesting to our readers. I was impressed with the level of sentence writing I saw this week. Students will share their writing with families during student-led conferences in March.
