Apr. 24 - 28, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can develop skills and processes for inquiry, problem-solving, and communication.

We had a robotics residency with Mr. Newman over the past month where we worked with Ozobots. We learned how to make our Ozobot move at different speeds and turn. We also learned how to code our pathway so our Ozobot would turn in our desired direction. Ask your child what codes they remember.

Here are the skills we worked on in reading this week. It would be helpful to review these at home and point out these words in books when you are reading with your child.

This week we said Goodbye to Mrs. G. She is now officially a teacher! Hopefully, we see her at Andrew Sibbald soon.

Here is a great math game we learned this week. It is called Pyramid and works to build number fluency and flexible thinking within 10. This is a great game to play at home.

Apr. 17 - 21, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can demonstrate a variety of locomotor movements.

This week was a big week in Grade 1! We went on a bus 5 times! We went swimming with our classmates! We are tired! It was amazing to see how independent our students were getting themselves in the pool and in their lessons. I enjoyed watching them learn to float, flutter, and dive. Students made great progress this week and seeing their confidence increase was incredible. THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who helped this week! Your support is greatly appreciated.

Daily Home Reading: Please ensure your child reads their home reading book every night, out loud 3 times. Students continue to work on decoding (sounding out words), fluency (reading so it sounds like a conversation) and expression (looking at punctuation). After reading, have them answer WH questions about what they read (ex: Who is the main character? What happened? Where are they?) Students are also encouraged to read any books they have at home. We want to build strong readers!

Apr. 10 - 14, 2023

Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can compare the length or capacity of two objects. I can order objects according to length or capacity.

Students measured items around the classroom with non-standard tools such as snap cubes. We even measured our feet! We discussed the difference between length and width and how we find these measurements. It came up in the discussion about what happens if one person measures in snap cubes and another measures using plastic teddy bears. How do we know what the accurate measurement is? This led to a conversation about standard measurement and why we have rulers. It would be fantastic if you could show your child how you use standard measurements at home. For example: using measuring cups/spoons, rulers, and tape measure. It is always more impactful to see our learning in real life.

We have started a coding unit using RoboGarden, made possible by Junior Achievement. Ask your child about their first day! More on this to follow in the coming weeks.
