Hello, Grade 1 Families,
Learning Intention: I can be informed about how financial decision-making contributes to the well-being of individuals, groups, and communities.
This week we participated in a teacher-led Junior Achievement program called "Our Families". We began our learning by discussing communities and families and what makes a family. This fits well with the writing we are doing about our fantastic families.
Once we understood the meaning of "family" we discussed what a neighbourhood is and what businesses or buildings we normally find in a neighbourhood. As we progressed, we learned about needs vs wants and some of them can be both. Ask your child to share some different needs vs wants with you. Vocabulary such as "entrepreneur" was discussed and we came up with different examples of businesses we would want to start! Ask your child what businesses we might find in a community.
We looked at a map and learned about a "key" (or legend) and what the compass rose tells us.
