May 8 - 12, 2023

 Hello, Grade 1 families,

Learning Intention: I can take risks and persevere when I am challenged. I can develop a capacity for imaginative and creative thought.

What a week! We hope you enjoyed our performance of "Bobcats on the Loose!" Students learned a lot about performance from Ana, our Trickster, and we had so much fun creating our own performance. During this learning time, we have also learned about bobcats. Did you know they love water and are excellent swimmers? It has distinctive black bars on its forelegs and a black-tipped, stubby tail which gives it the name bobcat. They are native to North America.

Below you will find a math game you can play at home to continue to strengthen the math fluency and reading skills we have been working on. We are also learning about the parts of the plant and have been listening to a fun song. Check it out here!

Students have asked for our Epic account info to be sent home again. There is an app as well.

May 1 - 5, 2023

 Hello, Grade 1 Families,

Learning Intention: I can gather data by sharing answers to questions. I can create a concrete graph using my data.

We have been learning about data. What is data? How do we collect it? How do we keep track of the data we have collected. How do we ask a question so we can get data? Once we have our data, then what?

Students have been creating their own questions for their surveys. Some examples of survey questions we have been asked are: "What is your favourite colour?" "What is your favourite animal?" "What are you doing for Big Brave?"

Once we have a good question we find 3-4 answers oeple can respond to. Then, comes the fun part! We get to ask our friends our questions. See if your child can tell you about their questions and how people responded.

With our data, we created a concrete graph using objects to measure our data. We have talked about how we need to line things up so we can get an accurate reading of our data.

Supporting Reading At Home Strategies:

  1. Sounding Out - students identify each sound (segmenting) and then combine them to say the word (blending)
  2. Successive Blending - Students decode and blend as they read the word ex: /f/ /fr/ /fro/ frog
  3. Connected Phonation - Student holds onto one sound until they begin the next word ex: /sssssssuuuuuuunnnnnn/ *Best with continuous sounds at the beginning of the word such as /s/
Here are the skills we worked on in reading this week:

The Leighton Art Centre was FABULOUS! We learned so much and had a wonderful exploring nature, learning some history and creating a beautiful and unique piece of art.
